Brian Chase 🤍 “Drummer Brian Chase is best known as a member of the vital indie-rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but that only reveals the tip of the iceberg where his creative life is concerned. A longtime participant in New York City’s busy underground-music scene, Chase has performed and recorded with a dizzying range of innovators, including Lee Ranaldo, Alan Licht, Tyondai Braxton, Andrea Parkins, Jeremiah Cymerman, and Mary Halvorson… As a solo artist, Chase for more than a decade has pursued an interest in the limitless possibilities of just intonation and drone…” Steve Smith, Night After Night Drums and Drones with visuals by Ursula Scherrer 🤍 Drums and Drones with visuals by Ursula Scherrer at National Sawdust, July 31, 2019

➤The YEAH YEAH YEAHS are an American indie rock band formed in New York City in 2000. The group is composed of vocalist and pianist "Karen O" (born Karen Lee Orzolek), guitarist and keyboardist "Nick Zinner", and drummer "Brian Chase". They are complemented in live performances by second guitarist "David Pajo" (formerly of Slint and Tortoise), who joined as a touring member in 2009 and replaced Imaad Wasif, who had previously held the role. According to an interview that aired during ABC's Live from Central Park SummerStage series, the band's name was taken from modern New York City vernacular. The band has recorded four studio albums; the first, "Fever to Tell", was released in 2003. The second, "Show Your Bones", was released in 2006 and was named the second best album of the year by NME. Their third studio album, "It's Blitz!", was released in March 2009. All three albums earned the band Grammy nominations for Best Alternative Music Album. Their fourth album, "Mosquito", was released in April 2013. ➤Credits: ©BBC ©BMG Rights Management ©Photo by Gary Stafford ➤The similarities and music used belong to the original owners. PUNKCAST1111-05 Brian Chase and Jon Catler: Works for Just Intonation Guitars #5 as performed at The Stone NYC on Feb 7 2007. 🤍 Feb 7 2011: Brian Chase responds to MokshaIS's comment: thank you for the comment those are great words there are many ways to tune a guitar in just intonation a simple way is to tune the open strings to harmonics. a way i like to do it starts with calling the low e the fundamental. i then get the 7th harmonic which is just above (or below, i'm not sure of the correct terminology) the 3rd fret and tune the d string to that; the 7th harmonic is slightly flatter than a 12tone minor 7th. from there i tune the a string to the third harmonic of the d string which is on the d string's 7th fret, and this gives me the 21st harmonic. i then tune the b string to the 3rd harmonic which i get form the 7th fret of the e string (or the 6th harmonic which is off of the third fret). from there i tune the g string to the 9th harmonic (which would be a slightly sharp 'F#') which i get from the third harmonic of the b string. after that i retune all of the strings and then tune the high e to the e. the description might sound messy in its words but the action of it is very simple. here is a chart i found online which could be useful: 🤍 for this performance i used a peterson strobe tuner with programmable settings. a version is also available as an app for iphone with a wide programmable frequency setting for its 'a' reference tuning pitch which can be used to get very specific frequencies. best, brian

More music playlists: 🤍 Album: Live At Secret Project Robot [EP] Track: 1 of 2 Title: A Feeling You Kind Of Know Artist: Brian Chase & Angus Tarnawsky Label: In Context Music Cat#: ICM014 Formats: 7" Vinyl/Digital Digital Release: 22nd June 2018 Physical Release: 6th July 2018 About This Release: This recording documents the progression of Brian Chase and Angus Tarnawsky's ongoing duet, showcasing their vision of an electrified-drumkit. In a physical sense, they use a drumkit wired with receivers and microphones, feeding the raw sound through external effects processors and devices such as samplers, all parts of which are capable of being controlled and manipulated in real-time. For Brian and Angus, electrifying the drumkit allows a transition from simply improvising with rhythm, to composing entirely new sonic worlds and subsequently inhabiting them within a performance. Once the audio from Brian's kit goes into the electronics of Angus' set-up, the sound is transformed, becoming an entirely new entity. This in turn influences Brian's playing, and the process continues as new music is produced through this method of continual unfolding. Beats layer on top of beats, textures atop textures, tones on tones. Constructed entirely from the multi-channel recording of an improvised live set, the two tracks for this release were edited and shape-shifted by the duo in post-production, further blurring the line between stage and studio. A strictly limited edition release, each of the of 25 copies has been hand cut at 33 1/3 rpm on transparent polycarbonate plastic using a Presto 6N lathe from the 1940s and is accompanied with a printed transparent insert, housed in a custom PVC sleeve. Brian Chase is a drummer and composer based in Brooklyn. Widely known as a member of the rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs, his diverse creative output encompasses multiple projects in the New York music scene, including Drums & Drones, an electro-acoustic project focusing on the application of just intonation to drums and percussion. Angus Tarnawsky is a sound-artist and experimental musician living in Toronto. Interested in altering perceptions and perspectives of environment through sound, his work frequently explores interactions between acoustic and electronic sources, utilizing analog feedback systems and modular synthesis.
